Printing on Alu Alu and Cold-Form Foil
Cold-form laminate protects moisture-sensitive medicines, but its stiffness and layered construction require printing controls matched specifically to the material.
What Makes Alu Alu Foil Different?
Alu Alu foil is a multi-layer laminate commonly combining aluminium, nylon or OPA and PVC. It is cold-formed into deep cavities and offers a strong barrier against moisture, oxygen and light. Pharmaceutical companies select it for sensitive formulations, high-value medicines and products intended for demanding storage climates. Compared with standard blister lidding foil, the laminate is thicker, stiffer and less willing to stretch.
Printing the Outer Layer
An Alu Alu foil printing machine applies quick-drying ink to the printable outer layer before forming and sealing. The unwind system releases the roll evenly, and guided rollers maintain a predictable web path through each colour station. Registration control keeps medicine information and graphics aligned with the required repeat. Drying temperature and airflow are selected to secure ink adhesion without distorting the laminate.
Control of Tension and Registration
Excessive tension can affect roll formation or create unwanted stress, while insufficient control can allow sideways movement and registration drift. A suitable drive arrangement, responsive tension controls and an edge-guiding option help the material travel consistently. Multi-colour artwork benefits from automatic registration sensing, although the final control configuration should reflect speed, print repeat and quality requirements.
